5 Money-Saving Tips for Books, Audiobooks, and Kindle Ebooks

Are you traveling this summer? Whether you’re headed to the beach or mountains, there’s nothing like getting lost in a good book or audiobook to make your vacation relaxing. But buying all those books can get expensive, even breaking your budget. Here are some tips for saving money on books, audiobooks, and Kindle/ebooks, and even getting books for free.

  • Use your local library (obviously)! Your tax dollars at work, and a fantastic, air-conditioned spot to find your next read, attend a class, meet a new friend, or participate in a community event. Check out this online calculator for how much money you can save by using the library instead of buying books, music, and other media. For me, it was hundreds of dollars just this year!

  • If you use Chrome as your browser, there is a free browser plug-in called Library Extension that when you are browsing Amazon, it alerts you if the book, ebook, or audiobook is currently available to borrow from your library. It takes less than a minute to install and is a great way to save money on books! Here’s what it looks like:

  • Are you an Audible member? Cancel it! That saves $150/year. Use a free app like Libby or Overdrive to borrow free audiobooks and ebooks for your Kindle. There's nothing better than a great audiobook for a summer road trip!

  • Use your community to trade and borrow books. Set up a book trading club with friends, host a book swap, or use local Facebook groups like Buy Nothing to ask if anyone has a copy of your favorite book to give.

  • If you buy books, look for used copies at thrift stores, independent book stores, library book sales, and online at independent booksellers like Powell's. Often they are 50-75% off the new book price, and it's great for the environment, too.

So, whether you're lounging by the pool or hitting the road, remember that enjoying the thrill of a good book doesn't have to come with a hefty price tag. Embrace the affordable options available to you and dive into a world of captivating stories while keeping your budget intact. Happy reading, and have an amazing summer!
